A 17-year-old aeronautical engineering student from Vadodara has drawn attention from India’s top defence research agency after building a simple mechanical system that could make fighter jet ejections safer. Jainil Champaneria has invented a life-saving system, called the Auto Locking Canopy Activation System (ALCAS), designed to automatically secure a fighter jet’s canopy during emergency ejections, reducing the risk of deadly failures that have affected some older aircraft.

A tragedy that sparked an idea

The idea for ALCAS began after a fatal crash in Rajasthan’s Churu district last July, where two Indian Air Force pilots lost their lives when their twin-seat Jaguar trainer went down shortly after takeoff. Witnesses said the pilots tried to steer the aircraft away from populated areas before it crashed.

The incident deeply affected Jainil. He studied aircraft accident reports from the past 15 years, analysed ejection procedures and found a pattern of canopy-related failures in extreme conditions, where the cockpit cover either did not lock or release properly during emergencies.

A simple solution to a complex problem

Jainil’s ALCAS stands out because of its simplicity. Instead of depending on electronics that could fail during high-stress conditions or battle damage, he created a purely mechanical system. It uses gravity-based elements such as pendulums and calibrated weights to activate automatically when required.

The idea is straightforward: when an emergency ejection sequence begins, the mechanism ensures the canopy is secured at the right moment, without needing any power supply or delicate circuits. This makes it more reliable in harsh combat or high-G environments.

From small workshop to national recognition

Working from a modest setup, Jainil built and refined several prototypes before finalising his design. He later secured a Defence Utility Patent and Design Registration for the system.

His innovation has also been recognised by the India Book of Records, which listed him as the youngest innovator to develop a specialised aviation safety device of this kind.His journey from a small workshop in Gujarat to collaboration with national defence experts underlines a powerful message: age is not a barrier when it comes to solving real-world problems.

If tested successfully, ALCAS could become a low-cost safety addition that saves lives in the skies. And for Jainil, this may be just the beginning of a career shaped by innovation, purpose and a deep respect for those who serve the nation.

કેન્દ્રીય મંત્રી મનસુખ માંડવિયાએ આ મામલે ક્વિક કોમર્સ સેક્ટરની કંપનીઓ સાથે વાત કરી છે. જે બાદ મોટા ભાગની કંપનીઓએ સરકારને આશ્વાસન આપ્યું છે કે, હવેથી જાહેરાતો તથા સોશિયલ મીડિયાથી ’10 મિનિટ’ ડિલિવરીની મુદત હટાવવામાં આવશે. મીડિયા અહેવાલોમાં દાવો કરાયો છે કે કેન્દ્ર સરકારે બ્લિંકકિટ, ઝેપ્ટો, સ્વીગી જેવી કંપનીઓ સાથે વાત કરી હતી. જે બાદ હવે વિવિધ કંપનીઓ ગિગ વર્કર્સ માટેની ટાઇમ લિમિટ હટાવશે.

કેન્દ્ર સરકારે તમામ કંપનીઓને ડિલિવરી પાર્ટનર્સની સુરક્ષાને સૌથી વધુ પ્રાથમિકતા આપવાના નિર્દેશ આપ્યા છે. સરકારનું માનવું છે કે ડિલિવરી વહેલા કરવાના દબાણમાં લોકોના જીવ જોખમમાં નાંખી શકાય નહીં.

વાસ્તવમાં, ફિલ્મમેકર સંજય લીલા ભણસાલીની નવી ફિલ્મ ‘દો દીવાને શહર મેં’માં મૃણાલ ઠાકુર અને સિદ્ધાંત ચતુર્વેદી લીડ રોલમાં છે. 21 નવેમ્બરે મેકર્સે ફિલ્મનું પહેલું પોસ્ટર શેર કર્યું, જેના પછી તેના પર ફેન્સની સાથે ઘણા સેલેબ્સે પણ રિએક્શન આપ્યા. આ દરમિયાન ધનુષે કોમેન્ટ કરતા લખ્યું, ‘જોવામાં અને સાંભળવામાં સારું લાગી રહ્યું છે.’ તેના જવાબમાં મૃણાલ ઠાકુરે રેડ હાર્ટ અને સૂરજમુખીવાળો ઇમોજી પોસ્ટ કર્યો.

આ કોમેન્ટ પછી સોશિયલ મીડિયા પર ફરી એકવાર ચર્ચા શરૂ થઈ ગઈ કે ધનુષ અને મૃણાલ ઠાકુર એકબીજાને ડેટ કરી રહ્યા છે. આ પહેલા પણ આ વર્ષે ઓગસ્ટમાં ફિલ્મ ‘સન ઓફ સરદાર 2’ના પ્રીમિયર દરમિયાન બંનેના ડેટિંગના સમાચાર સામે આવ્યા હતા. આ ઉપરાંત, ધનુષની ફિલ્મ ‘તેરે ઇશ્ક મેં’ની રેપ-અપ પાર્ટીમાં પણ મૃણાલ ઠાકુર જોવા મળી હતી. જોકે, અત્યાર સુધી બંને તરફથી આ મામલે કોઈ પ્રતિક્રિયા સામે આવી નથી.

The US Department of Justice has filed motions asking two judges in the Southern District of New York to authorize the public release of grand jury transcripts and exhibits from the prosecutions of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, ABC News reported. The move comes amid a 30-day deadline imposed by the newly enacted Epstein Files Transparency Act.

US Attorney Jay Clayton, appointed by Attorney General Pam Bondi to oversee investigations linked to Epstein, signed the motion seeking judicial approval for the release of materials, subject to necessary redactions.

“In the light of the Act’s clear mandate, the Court should authorize the Department of Justice to release the grand jury transcripts and exhibits and modify any preexisting protective orders that would otherwise prevent public disclosure by the Government of materials the disclosure of which is required by the Act,” the motion stated, according to the news outlet.

The filings noted that redactions could be applied to materials that “would jeopardize an active federal investigation or ongoing prosecution,” though they did not reference ongoing investigations into prominent figures including Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, and Reid Hoffman, recently ordered by Trump.

Ruling requested

The DOJ requested an expedited ruling, emphasizing that it would coordinate with relevant US Attorney’s offices to properly redact victim-related and personally identifying information.

Judge Richard Berman previously denied release

The department had previously sought approval to release the grand jury materials in August, but judges denied the request, ruling the government had not demonstrated sufficient legal grounds to unseal the documents.

Judge Richard Berman, who presided over Epstein’s 2019 case, rejected a Trump administration request in August, writing that a “significant and compelling reason” existed to keep the transcripts sealed.

Berman noted that the government already possessed over 100,000 pages of Epstein-related materials, dwarfing the roughly 70 pages of grand jury documents.

Grand jury sessions

The grand jury sessions took place on June 18 and July 2, 2019. The July 2 session concluded with grand jurors voting to indict Epstein. The remainder of the presentation included a PowerPoint slideshow and a call log. Epstein was arrested on July 6, 2019, and was later found dead in his Manhattan federal jail cell on August 10, 2019, in what authorities have ruled a suicide.

A four-judge panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court on Monday (November 24) unanimously voted to keep former President Jair Bolsonaro in police custody, two days after Justice Alexandre de Moraes ordered his arrest citing a flight risk.

Justices Flávio Dino, Cristiano Zanin and Carmen Lúcia joined Moraes in upholding the decision, ending more than 100 days of house arrest for the former leader.

Bolsonaro, 70, is awaiting final appeals against his 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup after his 2022 election loss to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Monitor tampering triggered arrest

Bolsonaro was arrested early Saturday after authorities said he reportedly used a soldering iron to tamper with his court-mandated ankle monitor. The breach occurred just hours before supporters were expected to gather outside his home — a gathering Justice Moraes warned could disrupt police monitoring.

In Sunday testimony, Bolsonaro said he had suffered a “nervous breakdown” caused by a change in medication, leading to “paranoia and hallucination” when he attempted to break the device. He denied any intention to flee.

Justice Dino rejected that argument in his written vote: “The admitted breach of electronic monitoring not only increases the risk of escape but also indicates a blatant violation of the precautionary measures imposed by the Judiciary.”

Judges cite repeated defiance

Moraes, who issued the arrest warrant, wrote that Bolsonaro had shown “repeated non-compliance with precautionary measures” and “evident disrespect to the court,” noting that the former president himself acknowledged tampering with the device.

According to case documents, authorities detected interference with Bolsonaro’s ankle monitor at 12:08 a.m. on Saturday, prompting the arrest order hours later.

From house arrest to police cell

Bolsonaro had been under house arrest since August, following his conviction in September for plotting a coup aimed at overturning his 2022 defeat. He has now been transferred to a special cell at Federal Police headquarters in Brasília.

Doctors and lawyers repeated Bolsonaro’s claim that medication changes led to hallucinations, telling reporters his actions were not an escape attempt.

Political downfall

Bolsonaro’s downfall has been dramatic — from rising to the presidency on anti-establishment rhetoric seven years ago to now facing a lengthy prison sentence.

His conviction stems from investigations into the January 8, 2023 insurrection, when thousands of his supporters stormed federal buildings in Brasília urging the military to overturn Lula’s election victory.

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) recently came forward and announced their squad for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. It is worth noting that after the conclusion of the ongoing second Test, both India and South Africa will lock horns across three ODIs that are slated to be played on November 30, December 3, and December 6. 

Announcing the squad, the BCCI named star batter KL Rahul as team India’s ODI skipper for the series. Notably, Rahul will be taking up the mantle of the captain as regular skipper Shubman Gill misses out due to a neck injury.

With Rahul being appointed as the stand-in ODI skipper in Gill’s absence, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif came forward and backed the decision to name the star batter as the captain in the 50-over format. 

“There’s no one else. Rohit Sharma should’ve captained but they moved on from him earlier. He should’ve been the captain now, given he is coming off a hundred in Sydney. The Indian team is now having a mindset of having to move on and giving opportunities to new players. Till the time Rohit is playing and in form, he should’ve captained. Virat Kohli won’t captain, Yashasvi Jaiswal doesn’t play that regularly, Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad have been given opportunities. Even Rishabh Pant is coming back after a long time,” Kaif said in a video on his YouTube channel. 

Kaif pointed out KL Rahul’s captaincy experience in the IPL

Furthermore, Kaif went on to state that with KL Rahul having some experience with captaincy in the IPL, the same could go on to help him as he is set to take on the Proteas as captain across three ODIs. 

“Hence, he seems like the right choice. He has captaincy experience and even did it in IPL. Until Shubman Gill returns, Rahul seems like the right option. I’m still surprised though. The player who made the team, who backed KL Rahul, it’s Rohit Sharma. Despite being in the squad, the captaincy is snatched away from him. There will be questions about that,” he added.

Nigeria has suffered one of its worst mass kidnapping as gunmen abducted over 300 schoolchildren in Niger state in central Nigeria on Friday, amid security fears.

Earlier, it was estimated that 227 students were abducted. However, the Christian Association of Nigeria on Saturday said that the number of students and teachers abducted from a Catholic school St Mary’s co-education school is 315.

The Christian Association of Nigeria said a verification exercise had found that a further 88 students had been captured after they tried to escape.

“This now makes it 303 students (and) … 12 teachers, bringing the total number of abducted persons to 315,” it said in a statement.

No group has so far claimed the responsibility.

On Monday, the gunmen stormed a secondary school in neighbouring Kebbi state, abducting 25 girls.

The two abduction operations have taken place since US President Donald Trump threatened military action over what he called the killing of Christians by radical Islamists in Nigeria.

Though the Nigerian government has not commented on the number of abducted students and teachers, the number is almost half of the school’s student population of 629.

The intelligence department and police were “doing the head count” and the figure would be released by the end of the day, reported A,P quoting Niger state governor Mohammed Umar Bago, as saying to reporters.

As a precautionary measure, Bago, whose government had ordered some schools shut, also ordered the closure of all schools in his state.

The national education ministry has also ordered 47 boarding secondary schools across the country be shut.

President Bola Tinubu has cancelled international engagements, including attending the G20 summit in Johannesburg, to handle the crisis.

Meanwhile, in a statement, Pentagon has said that during talks with Nigerian National Security Advisor Nuhu Ribadu, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called on Abuja to “take both urgent and enduring action to stop violence against Christians.

Nigeria is still scarred by the kidnapping of nearly 300 girls by Boko Haram jihadists at Chibok in northestern Borno state more than a decade ago. Some of those girls are still missing.
