Once again, an incident of language row has come to light in Maharashtra’s capital, Mumbai, where an argument over a seat on a local train turned into a full-blown language war, with one woman telling the other to learn Marathi or ‘get out’.
The incident happened on Friday evening in the crowded ladies’ compartment on the Central Line.
The incident was also captured on camera and shared on social media platforms. The video that went viral on social media, showed six to seven women arguing over a seat.
During the debate, one woman criticised another female passenger for not speaking in Marathi language.
“If you want to stay in our Mumbai, speak Marathi, otherwise get out,” she said.
Soon after, other local women in the train joined the fight.
This incident came amid ongoing language row in Maharashtra, with Raj Thackeray’s Maharashtra Navnirman Sena party workers being condemned for targeting and abusing people for not speaking in Marathi.
Earlier this month, a shopkeeper in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area was assaulted by MNS workers over a WhatsApp status deemed offensive to Marathi people.
The video of the incident showed the shopkeeper being forced to apologise publicly while being assaulted.
Recently, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray asserted that he would not accept any attempt by the Maharashtra government to implement a three-language policy in the state.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray on Friday said if Hindi was made mandatory for Classes 1 to 5 in schools in Maharashtra, his party will “shut down schools”.
Speaking at a rally at Mira Bhayandar near Mumbai, he referred to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s latest averment that Hindi will be taught in state schools at any costs.
Thackerayalso hit back at BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s controversial “patak-patak ke maarenge” remarks.
In a counter-attack, Raj Thackeray said, “A BJP MP said, ‘Marathi logon ko hum yahan pe patak patak ke maarenge’… You come to Mumbai. Mumbai ke samundar mein dubo dubo ke maarenge.”

US President Donald Trump said that his administration may begin sending out letters to trading partners as soon as Friday setting unilateral tariff rates ahead of a July 9 deadline for negotiations.
“We’re probably going to be sending some letters out, starting probably tomorrow, maybe 10 a day to various countries saying what they’re going to pay to do business with the US,” Trump told reporters on Thursday as he left Washington for an event in Iowa.
Trump has long threatened that if countries fail to reach deals with the US before next week’s deadline, he would simply impose rates on them, raising the stakes for trading partners who have rushed to secure agreements with his administration.
The US president initially announced his higher so-called “reciprocal” tariffs on April 2, but paused those for 90 days to allow countries time to negotiate, putting in place a 10% rate during that interval.
So far, the Trump administration has announced deals with the UK and Vietnam and agreed to a truce with China that saw the world’s two largest economies ease tit-for-tat tariffs.
Asked Thursday if more deals were on the way, Trump responded that “we have a couple of other deals, but you know, my inclination is to send a letter out and say what tariffs they are going to be paying.”
“It’s much easier,” he said.
Trump announced the Vietnam deal on Wednesday, saying that the US would place a 20% tariff on Vietnamese exports to the US and a 40% rate on goods deemed transshipped through the nation — a reference to the practice whereby components from China and possibly other nations are routed through third countries on their way to the US.
While the rates are lower than the 46% duty Trump imposed on Vietnam initially, they are higher than the universal 10% level. And many of the particulars of the deal are still unclear, with the White House yet to release a term sheet or publish any proclamation codifying the agreement.
Still, investors who have eagerly anticipated any deals between the US and trading partners were buoyed Wednesday by the Vietnam announcement, which saw share prices of American manufacturers with facilities in the country rise.
Many major trading partners, however, such as Japan, South Korea and the European Union, are still working to finalize deals. The president has expressed optimism about reaching an agreement with India but has spoken harshly about the prospects of an accord with Japan, casting Tokyo as a difficult negotiating partner. He intensified his criticism this week, saying that Japan should be forced to “pay 30%, 35% or whatever the number is that we determine.”
The president on Tuesday also said he was not considering delaying next week’s deadline. Asked about any potential extension of talks, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said earlier Thursday that Trump would make the final call.
“We’re going to do what the president wants, and he’ll be the one to determine whether they’re negotiating in good faith,” Bessent said on CNBC when asked whether the deadline might be lengthened.

Fuel inventory management has traditionally been disturbed by inefficiencies, manual errors, and stock discrepancies, often leading to operational disruptions and financial losses. As fueling stations expand their networks and handle increasing transaction volumes, the need for smarter, technology-driven solutions becomes critical. The introduction of AI-powered tracking systems, real-time reconciliation mechanisms, and cloud-integrated dashboards is revolutionizing how fuel stations monitor stock levels, optimize replenishment schedules, and maintain compliance.
Rohith Vegesna has been leading advancements in this transformation, leveraging advanced technologies to modernize fuel inventory tracking. His expertise in designing AI-driven solutions has played a key role in improving inventory accuracy, reducing stockouts, and streamlining reconciliation processes. Through the development of an automated tracking framework, he has enabled real-time fuel stock monitoring and demand forecasting, ensuring stations maintain optimal inventory levels while minimizing storage costs. His research paper, “Automated Reporting Software for Fuel Usage and Dispenser Activity”, has been pivotal in defining new benchmarks for automated fuel monitoring systems. Additionally, his work in automating reconciliation between Automatic Tank Gauging (ATG) readings and fuel transactions has significantly reduced revenue losses resulting from stock mismanagement.
These advancements have contributed to significant improvements in fuel station operations, fostering greater efficiency and accuracy in inventory management. The implementation of AI-powered tracking models has led to a 99% accuracy rate in inventory management, virtually eliminating stock discrepancies. Fuel stockouts, a persistent issue that often disrupts station operations, have been reduced by 60%, ensuring consistent fuel availability. By automating 85% of fuel reconciliation processes, manual intervention has been minimized, leading to fewer errors and more reliable stock data. The integration of predictive analytics has further enhanced efficiency, boosting overall operational performance by 50% and lowering inventory holding costs by 30% through optimized procurement strategies.
Vegesna’s contributions extend beyond individual projects, shaping broader industry practices in fuel inventory management. His role in developing an AI-driven fuel inventory optimization system has paved the way for more accurate demand forecasting and automated replenishment scheduling. The US Supreme Court on Monday overturned a lower court order that blocked the Trump administration from deporting undocumented Venezuelan migrants using an obscure 18th-century wartime law.
However, it said that migrants subject to deportation under the Alien Enemies Act must get a court hearing before being taken away from the United States.
“For all the rhetoric of the dissents,” the court wrote in an unsigned opinion, the high court order confirms “that the detainees subject to removal orders under the AEA are entitled to notice and an opportunity to challenge their removal.”
In fact, the administration must give Venezuelans who it claims are gang members “reasonable time” to go to court.
Attorney General Pam Bondi called the court’s ruling “a landmark victory for the rule of law.”
“An activist judge in Washington, DC does not have the jurisdiction to seize control of President Trump’s authority to conduct foreign policy and keep the American people safe,” Bondi wrote in a social media post.
At the same time, the three liberal justices dissented, arguing that the government was attempting to bypass judicial oversight and should not be rewarded for doing so.
This case has become a critical flashpoint amid growing tensions between the White House and the federal courts.
The initial order halting deportations to El Salvador was issued by U.S. District Judge James E. Boasberg, the chief judge at the federal courthouse in Washington.
President Donald Trump cited the Alien Enemies Act for the first time since World War II to defend the deportation of hundreds of individuals, using a presidential proclamation that labelled the Tren de Aragua gang as an invading force.
Meanwhile, attorneys from the American Civil Liberties Union filed the lawsuit on behalf of five Venezuelan noncitizens, who were being held in Texas, hours after the proclamation was made public and as immigration authorities were shepherding hundreds of migrants to waiting airplanes.
Boasberg imposed a temporary halt on deportations and also ordered planeloads of Venezuelan immigrants to return to the U.S. That did not happen. The judge held a hearing last week over whether the government defied his order to turn the planes around. The administration has invoked a “ state secrets privilege ” and refused to give Boasberg any additional information about the deportations.
Trump and his allies have called for impeaching Boasberg. In a rare statement, Chief Justice John Roberts said, “impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision.”
The Alien Enemies Act, enacted in 1798 as part of the Alien and Seditious Acts, is a U.S. federal law that grants the President the authority to detain or relocate citizens from countries deemed hostile during times of war or invasion. It specifically applies to immigrants without providing court hearings based on their country of origin or citizenship.

Originally designed to prevent foreign espionage and sabotage during wartime, the law has been controversially used against immigrants who are lawfully present in the U.S. without any signs of disloyalty. This has raised concerns about possible violations of constitutional rights, including due process and equal protection.

NEW YORK: A bogus rumor that President Donald Trump was considering a pause in tariffs briefly lifted markets Monday before the White House shot down the unfounded reports.
The confusion — which was amplified on social media and by some traditional media outlets — lasted less than a half hour but reflected a jittery mood on Wall Street as stocks plunged over worries that Trump’s tariffs could torpedo the global economy.
The origin of the false report was unclear but it appeared to be a misinterpretation of comments made by Kevin Hassett, director of the White House National Economic Council, during a Fox News interview earlier Monday morning.
Asked whether Trump would consider a 90-day tariff pause suggested by a prominent hedge fund manager, Hassett said “I think the president is going to decide what the president is going to decide.”
Nearly two hours later, multiple user accounts on social media platform X posted identical messages claiming Hassett said Trump is considering a pause for all countries except China. Stock traders and some news outlets picked up the story, and the market skyrocketed on the hint of good news.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average briefly erased a morning loss of 1,700 points, shot up more than 800 points and then went back to a loss of 629 points. The S&P 500 likewise made sudden up-and-down lurching movements.
The White House initially appeared as confused as everyone else. But after 20 minutes, a government account rejected the report as “fake news.”
Ukraine and the U.S. have reached an agreement on a framework for a broad economic deal that would include the exploitation of rare earth minerals, three senior Ukrainian officials said Tuesday.
The officials, who were familiar with the matter, spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. One of them said that Kyiv hopes that signing the agreement will ensure the continued flow of U.S. military support that Ukraine urgently needs.
There was no immediate response to a request for comment from the administration of US President Donald Trump.
The agreement could be signed as early as Friday and plans are being drawn up for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to travel to Washington to meet Trump, according to one of the Ukrainian officials.
Another official said the agreement would provide an opportunity for Zelenskyy and Trump to discuss continued military aid to Ukraine, which is why Kyiv is eager to finalize the deal.
